Is this generation of footballers just mediocre?
By this generation I mean those currently aged 24-29, which is the age where most outfield players should be at their peak.

If I think of the best players they are all either 23 or under (Mbappe, Haaland, Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Pedri, etc.) or over 30 (Salah, Mane, Neymar, de Bruyne, Van Dijk, etc.)

I wonder if that's partly why all these older players in their mid 30s like Messi, Modric, Benzema, Lewandowski, etc. are still playing at the top level. There's simply not been players good enough to even threaten their place.

Great point about tv coverage there Manners.
As long as you have an internet connection and the time, you can watch any international team/player any time you want. There was a time when you had to wait foor 4 years just to hear some of the names of players who would turn out to be stars in a world cup.

Jaan - I take your point, world cups don't have that same variety and mystique about them now like a Valderrama popping up with all his hair, looking forward to watching Brazil with all the back heels and step overs and wincing just thinking about what the Uruguayan defenders are going to get up to and so on, but the last world cup in Russia was pretty good, particularly the group games.

Obviously TV has taken away a lot from it as you can see the vast majority of the top players play all the time now, one of the highlights of a world cup for me was looking forward to watching a player who you might not have seen play since the previous world cup or maybe the Euro's.

With a WC coming up I must admit I don't find football anything like it once felt.

Used to be an awesome spectacle watching a world cup. A rare treat. Most countries had star players to admire and a style of their own, but the chance for unknowns to shine made it so interesting.

Football has become an overly saturated global borefest now where individual talent rarely stands out, with tactics becoming rigid and industry standard.

People talk about Maradona as the best player ever, but he might not have ever won a WC had VAR existed.

It's not dead yet, maybe there's life in this thread still, can see it morphing and making a comeback as not just a thread for posters to reply to, but an incorporation of bits and pieces from 'The Generation Game'.

What can you remember from the conveyor belt?

Really? I always took you for one of the political bores who infest this site these days. Still, 4 posts for you on a football thread, which you initially said should be deleted. Big day for you, son.

I wouldn't worry, Nutsin. This thread's about football so it's not for you anyway.

If you remove the word generation then what’s the point of the thread?

Re: Is this generation of footballers just mediocre?
Yeah, I know generation wasn't the best word to use, but it would have been a very long title if I explained what I meant there instead of in the opening line. Should have realised that people rarely read beyond the headline anyway.

A generation is now considered 5 years.

Re: Is this generation of footballers just mediocre?
It's a football topic, which some people enjoy being able to discuss.

If it is not for you, there is a wide world out there.

Lukaku is another, who if fit, just squeezes in.

Re: Is this generation of footballers just mediocre?
Fucking hell, shorty, you're being a proper dick on this thread for some reason.

It was my opinion. A few minutes ago I googled best players in the world to see if what I was saying seems valid. That led me to the list by 442. I expect any other list would have similar results.
